Canecutters

Canecutters

‘Canecutters’ 24 x 36ins (61 x 91cm) Oil on stretched canvas Framed.

Where the sugar cane grows, the tropical sun shines down. It took hard working men to clear the fields, to sidestep the snakes and beat off the rats. The Cookie kept the teams well fed and plenty of dark hot tea and damper during their smoko breaks. There was fierce competition between the gangs to finish first. Competition was also strong between adjoining properties. The mechanical harvester and need for firing the fields saw the passing of the bronzed band of cutters as they dwindled out and went to find other work. I loved devising this painting to bring the strength of the men, the heat and humidity and the lush greenery of the tropics.
